As we approach the deadline for 2025 awards and contests, see how some of last year’s awardees for K-Kids Distinguished Advisor and Distinguished Officer were recognized. For each of the winners named below, the accompanying remarks were made by people who nominated them for their care, mentoring and empowerment of members and officers:
Abigail Avila, faculty advisor of Hancock Elementary School K-Kids in San Diego, California, U.S.
- “Set an example for others to look out for and include everyone.”
- “Empowering members to take the initiative in planning and completing service projects.”
Jennifer Harrison, faculty advisor of Athens City Intermediate School K-Kids Club in Athens, Tennessee, U.S.
“Empowers officers to take the initiative. At officers’ meetings, they plan activities and regular monthly club meetings. These officers lead their peers under the guidance of Ms. Harrison.”
John Shertzer, Kiwanis advisor of Snacks Crossing Elementary School in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.
“Challenges kids to critically think, create projects, utilize teamwork and execute a project. At the same time, he lets the group evolve, does not push his own agendas and allows the kids to problem-solve themselves.”
Student members who are club officers were also nominated for going the extra mile. Here are some of the nominees, with their nominators’ remarks:
Alani, secretary of Rowland Elementary K-Kids in Rowland Heights, California, U.S.
“Alani is a great listener and shows respect when others are speaking. She also presented about K-Kids to the school board. She is always willing to lend a hand and teach others.”
Brittany, president of Sharon Primary School K-Kids in St. Thomas, Barbados.
“She is helpful, always willing to share and participate, especially projects outside of school time. She genuinely cares for others.”
Nick, president of Barnum Woods Elementary School K-Kids in East Meadow, New York, U.S.
“When he thinks someone is feeling left out or unhappy for any reason, he always finds a way to brighten their day with his gentle, caring ways and great sense of humor. He is able to change a member’s mindset from negative to positive and lead them back on track to becoming a contributing member of the club.”
Remember, if you have an outstanding club advisor or officer, nominate them for a Distinguished Award. Download the K-Kids Awards and Contests Guide for information about these awards and how to apply. Or go to our awards and contests webpage.
