You can help your K-Kids club make a smooth transition to the next school year. Here’s how:

First, hold club officer elections:

  • With the club, review the responsibilities of each officer and the role they play. These are listed in the K-Kids Advisor Guide.
  • Collect the names of interested candidates and create a ballot.
  • Have candidates share why they want to serve. They can make posters or participate in a Q&A so members can learn more about them.
  • Conduct a vote using ballots or paper.
  • Count votes and announce winners at the next meeting.

Prepare for training:

  • Pick a date, time and reserve a location.
  • Send an invitation to the outgoing and new K-Kids officers.
  • Ask outgoing officers to prepare answers to one or more of these questions:
  • What did you learn from being a leader?
  • What helped you accomplish your officer tasks?
  • What would you do differently if you served again?
  • What worked for you that you would to do the same way?
  • Invite and secure commitments from the Kiwanis club advisor and other adults to help.
  • Determine responsibilities/tasks for each volunteer.
  • Determine the training topics and activities. Here are suggestions:
  • Include an icebreaker and team-building activity.
  • Have outgoing officers share leadership insights.
  • Review officer responsibilities in the K-Kids Advisor Guide.
  • Cover parts of the program kit’s guides, including Officer Guides, K-Kids Advisor Guide, K-Kids Member Guide, K-Kids Service Guide.
  • Teach the K-Kids motto, mission, pledge and values available in the K-Kids Member Guide.
  • Discuss how meetings work.
  • Introduce parliamentary procedure (if applicable).
  • Show the “Ways to Do Service” video.
  • Set club goals.
  • Select activities the club will do next year from the K-Kids Member Guide and K-Kids Service Guide.
  • Explore K-Kids awards and contests.
  • Create an agenda for the training event. Include the activities and the people who will speak or lead activities.
  • Gather any supplies you’ll need.

Finally, when training day arrives, welcome the new officers and enjoy the time together. Good luck!
