Good leaders often have certain skills in common. To help Builders Club members learn to be leaders, you can encourage them to develop some of those key skills — such as listening, communication, empathy, perspective-taking, decision-making, problem-solving, planning, analysis, adaptability, authenticity and delegation.
Advisors, officers and committee chairs can build these skills in members by:
- Helping them determine their talents and interests and giving them tasks where they can use them. For example, artistic students can create project posters or good writers can write school announcements.
- Making specific members responsible for recurring tasks. For instance, taking pictures during events or keeping track of project supplies.
- Having members lead small-group, short-term work. A committee may have several tasks to accomplish at the same time — so the chair could create smaller work groups for each task.
- Creating a supportive and inclusive culture. A K-Kids club should be a place where students can be themselves and learn to accept and appreciate differences in others.
